Just Me

Things I wish I'd written down at the time

One of the reasons to start this blog was to write down things I wanted to write down. I have had a bad habit of letting stuff go. Stuff that it seemed to need saying, but - having no one to say it to - was left unsaid.

One of the things I wish I had written down somewhere a quarter of a century ago, was my millenium prediction for the 21st Century. I did not believe then, and I am not alone in believing now, that the USA would remain one country by the year 2100. I actually thought it would be lucky to make it to 2050.

My reasoning for this prediction was simple. There are at least 3 different parts of the main land mass of the USA that are completely incompatible with each other. There is a West Coast, and East Coast and the South and Central States. There is a wealth divide, a cultural divide and now, in 2025, a very stark political divide. Then there is Hawaii and Alaska. Both are physically apart from the main USA.

With Trump in the White House, these divides have never looked so stark. Even the prospect of a split in the Union is now being openly talked of.

Perhaps the first crack will appear in Alaska. Trump seems to forget it exists. He states that the reason USA doesn't have to help Ukraine is that there "is an ocean" between them. In fact, the distance between the USA and Russia at its narrowest point is less than 60 miles. The Russian border to the East with the Alaskan border to the West has but a comparatively small waterway between them. Putin is very keen to dominate the Arctic. Who says his next attempt at expansion won't be into Alaska? Perhaps he'll want to buy it back from the USA (as Trump seems to think that all lands are for sale) and if he doesn't get a great deal, maybe he will try to invade. Will Trump want help from NATO? And if he does, will it come?
